Engineering girls gone away? (Discussion)

oLahav saidWed, 30 Jul 2008 18:53:12 -0000 ( Link )

According to “this interesting article”http://www.prism-magazine.org/dec07/feature_generation-gap.cfm, posted on Prism, female engineering undergrad student numbers are dropping. This is in spite of a rise in female faculty.

What’s your response to this matter? What do you think is the reason for this? Anything concrete or just old-fashioned bias? What can be done to help?

Some of us are probably getting interested in the less heavy load on their brains as of now , because of small and not so secluded jobs paying them enough for a 3year degree.

Some of us, I think are getting over confident that they are getting concesions and encouragement in alomst every field that they choose.

Women develope the very sense of dependency no matter how indepentedent they are. Thery either have a family bonding or you know marital bonding, this could probably apply to more in number for females in India.

Talking about engineering, I think females only opt for a few branches soemthing that doesnt require muscle power; like mechanical engeering or automobile engineering.

career challenges require indipendent travelling and manging external or outside home schedules; This is still not a pleasure to women sector , specifically in india.

    This is my opinion.

in our india most of the parents want their daughters to get married soon after 18 years of age ….so most them prefer 3 yr course…....even if they are unmarried then also they have many family bondings. even if they take up engg they choose some simple branch, which will be so considered as reserved by the parents. even if girls do better in their engineering and get placed in some company they are not easily permitted to work by being away from home/ hometown, as parents fear sending their daughters alone.(except some of them from big cities/ metros)

I agree Varsha. I am a mechanical engineer working in the same field and few girls like me opt for it. About 5 % of my undergrad fellowmates were females and 90% of them are not working after 3 years of end of college. Even when these girls do study engineering - whats the use?
